How to Use This Aquarium Canister Filter

1. Unpack & Inspect: Carefully unpack all components, including the filter unit, filter media (foam and ceramic), intake and outlet pipes, hoses, adapters, and power cable. Ensure all parts are present and undamaged.
2. Install Filter Media: Place the provided coarse 20 ppi filter foam and ceramic media into the designated filter baskets or chambers within the canister, following any internal guides for proper layering.
3. Connect Hoses & Pipes: Attach the inlet and outlet hoses securely to the filter unit. Connect the intake tube with the inlet strainer to one hose and the water distributor nozzle or spray bar to the other hose, positioning them appropriately within your aquarium.
4. Position the Filter: Place the FiltoSmart 100 filter next to or behind your aquarium. Ensure there is enough space for future access and maintenance. An optional bracket can be used for wall mounting (bracket not included).
5. Prime & Start: Fill the filter canister with aquarium water (or as indicated in the quick start guide). Utilize the filter’s self-venting function to remove any trapped air. Once primed, connect the power cable to a suitable electrical outlet to begin operation.

Care & Maintenance Tips

• Regular Pre-Filter Cleaning: Periodically clean or replace the coarse 20 ppi filter foam. The frequency will depend on your aquarium’s bioload and water parameters. Cleaning the pre-filter prevents clogging and maintains optimal flow.
• Ceramic Media Replacement: Replace the ceramic filter media sparingly, ideally only during a complete tank restart. Disturbing the beneficial biological load too frequently can negatively impact water quality.
• Monitor Filter Performance: Observe your filter’s flow rate and water clarity. A noticeable decline in performance indicates that media cleaning or replacement might be necessary.
• Hose & Impeller Maintenance: Annually, or as needed, clean the hoses to remove any algae or detritus buildup that can restrict flow. Also, inspect and clean the impeller and its housing to ensure quiet and efficient operation.
• Check for Leaks: Regularly inspect all connections and seals for any signs of leakage, especially after maintenance, to prevent water damage.
