NT LABS Test Hardness (GH / KH) for Superior Water Stability
The NT LABS Test Hardness (GH / KH) is a comprehensive water testing kit designed to help aquarium hobbyists monitor the dissolved mineral content of their tanks. General Hardness (GH) tracks the concentration of calcium and magnesium, which are vital for fish health, plant growth, and the skeletal development of invertebrates. Meanwhile, Carbonate Hardness (KH) measures carbonates and bicarbonates, acting as a critical buffer that stabilizes the pH level of your water to prevent harmful fluctuations.
Whether you are maintaining a community tank or a specialized breed, understanding your hardness levels is key. Most tropical freshwater tanks thrive with a GH of 4–12 dGH and a KH of 3–8 dKH. However, the kit allows you to customize your water chemistry, whether you need the softer water required by Discus and Tetras or the harder water preferred by Livebearers and African Cichlids.
Specifications

How to Use This Water Testing Kit
- Ensure the provided test tube is completely clean before starting.
- Fill the test tube with exactly a 5 ml sample of your aquarium water.
- Add 1 drop of the specific GH or KH reagent and shake the tube gently.
- Continue adding the reagent one drop at a time, shaking after each addition, until a complete color change occurs.
- Count the total number of drops used to reach the color change.
- The final drop count represents your water hardness level in dGH or dKH.
- Rinse the test tube thoroughly with clean water after the process is complete.
Care & Maintenance Tips
- Avoid Rapid Changes: Never adjust GH or KH levels abruptly, as sudden fluctuations can cause severe stress to fish and plants.
- Correcting Low Levels: If readings are too low, gradually introduce mineral supplements, hardness buffers, or crushed coral.
- Correcting High Levels: To reduce excessive hardness, perform partial water changes using softer water or Reverse Osmosis (RO) water.
- Storage: Keep reagents tightly sealed and stored in a cool, dry place to maintain accuracy.
- Equipment Hygiene: Always rinse the test tube immediately after use to prevent cross-contamination between GH and KH tests.
